Slovakia often gets skipped in favor of its neighbors, but Bratislava is a small, walkable capital with a castle overlooking the Danube. The real draw is the countryside: the High Tatras for hiking and skiing, and castles like Spiš scattered across the hills. It stays cheap compared to Western Europe, and distances between sights are short. A few days here pairs well with a longer trip through Central Europe.
